The paper by Iwamoto J et al. “Effects of alendronate and alfacalcidol on the femoral bone mass and bone strength in orchidectomized rats” in CJP, 2008, 51(6), pp. 331-337, also receives several concerns about authorship, partial duplication and discrepancies in animal drug doses and preparation.[1] Co-author Yoshihiro Sato states that he should not have been listed as an author. In Iwamoto J. et al. in 2008,[1] column 2 (Initial body weight) and column 3 (Final body weight) of Table 1 are identical to the publication by the same group of authors in J Nutr Sci Vitaminol.[2] These two publications used the same experimental intervention on an identical group of 50 rats. Discrepancies:

A. The paper in CJP states ALF was administrated at 0.1 μg/kg, whereas the paper in J Nutr Sci Vitaminol states ALF was administrated at 0.05 μg/kg.[1],[2] Both statements cannot be true.

B. The paper in J Nutr Sci Vitaminol[2] states that all animals were labeled with 10 mg/kg calcein by intramuscular injection 10 and 3 days before sacrifice, which was not mentioned in the paper in CJP.[1]

This is an example of “salami” publishing, which is not scientific misconduct, but in the gray area of performing good research. At submission, the authors should have indicated similar work from the same set of experimental animals was submitted elsewhere. The CJP paper by Iwamoto J et al. in 2008[1] presents data published elsewhere and there are discrepancies in dose (ALF), and it does not state the complete protocol used in the animals (prior calcein labeling by intramuscular injection).

We therefore retract this paper and deeply apologize to the community for not having noticed these issues prior to publication.
